The First Generation of the Kia Optima Mid-Size Sedan
The Kia Optima has been a great choice for Hiawatha drivers in search of a mid-size sedan since 2000. We're happy to have the current 2015 Optima here at McGrath Kia. If you're shopping for a new sedan near Cedar Rapids, then the Optima is worth a close look; with a base MSRP of $21,200, and packed with features at every trim level, it's a phenomenal value. Of course, a used model would also be a great choice. Here are some of the highlights of the model's first generation.
The First-Generation Optima: 2000 to 2005
The Kia Optima came out in all markets starting in 2000. The first-generation model was closely related to the Hyundai Sonata; in fact, the only way that they differed was in exterior styling. It came equipped with either a 198-hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine or a larger 2.7L V6 that produced 185 hp. It was initially available with a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission.
The first-generation Optima came in either LX or SE trim levels. The former came with power windows, the four-cylinder engine, air conditioning, front and side airbags, and more. The SE added alloy wheels, heated mirrors, a moonroof, remote keyless entry, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and wood trim.
The first-generation Optima model a minor styling update in 2002. This update was concentrated on the front end, where the Optima received a different front fascia. That year, the Optima also received a new center stack, seat fabric, and door panels. The V6 engine was also revised, now offering 178 hp. In the United States, the Optima actually didn't wear the Kia logo on the front grille until the 2004 model year. The next year, the headlights were redesigned.
The first-generation Optima made a name for itself based on smooth and comfortable ride, spacious interior, and affordable price point.
